ABOUT SOMOS
SomoS is a non-commercial artist-run art space with an emphasis on interdisciplinary projects, intergenerational community, and diversity, founded in 2012. Working with emerging and mid-career artists, SomoS provides space, knowledge, and resources for the production, presentation, and reflection of the arts. Its mission is to create an international open framework for innovative arts, curatorial projects, education, and creative cooperation. SomoS’ engaged schedule of exhibitions, performances, seminars, and artist talks is free to the public and aims to spark interest, discussion, cooperation, and understanding, as it activates art’s unique positive uniting potential.
OVERVIEW
Selected by Artslant Magazine as one of Berlin’s most interesting alternative art spaces, SomoS consists of an exhibition space and an international Artist-in-Residence program. The art initiative is situated on the first floor of a mixed residential/commercial building on Kottbusser Damm 95 in the popular creative area where the Kreuzberg and Neukölln neighborhoods meet. The historic space was originally built as an early 20th-century Konzertcafe. It has through the years seen use as an erotic cinema complex, pool hall, and atelier, until its ruinous interiors were reimagined into an art hub in 2012 by architect Tiago Oudman of Studio Kunchi. At SomoS’ location, the curatorial projects of the former art space Kunstraum Richard Sorge (2008-2011) are continued; embedded in a broader practice, involving creative cooperation, art production, and education.
